National Birthday, Dragon Tails, and Trout

Dear blog readers,

Substack has added so many awesome features lately. To give the example of a few; Unsplash photos, polls so readers can vote on things, text to speech etc. that Blogger does not have. So from now on I will be posting my weekly posts over there. But I like this blog a lot so I'm keeping it. But whenever I publish a post on Substack, I will write a preview of the post here with a link to the Substack post. (Example below!) To never miss a post, you can subscribe to my Substack (it's free!) and have my posts delivered directly to your email inbox. To do that, click HERE

Of course, you can also just keep coming to the blog whenever you feel like it, and click the link to the Substack posts. Whatever works for you!

Happy Tuesday!

How has your week been? How was your Fourth of July? It was a beautiful, sunny day at the Castle, really the perfect weather for grilling. I put out some tiny American flags (I don’t have a flagpole, or one of those brackets that stick to the side of your house, although I would really like either one) and ate some delicious Bratwurst and potato salad. Hot dogs are tasty, don’t get me wrong; but lately I’ve preferred Bratwurst, in a bun, with a nice amount of yellow mustard. It’s so good, and I’m glad that tonight’s dinner is leftovers! Happy birthday, America!

Gloomy Weather Reading, Phoenixes, and a Promo Code

Photo by  Alessia Cocconi  on  Unsplash It’s a very stormy, overcast kind of day at the Castle as I write this post. It wouldn’t take much to make me think of books I love, but doesn’t a day that makes you stay inside just make you want to read? A few years ago, I read the Phantom of the Opera. While I had seen the Emmy Rossum movie adaptation, I had never read the book, so I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was fantastic, and a real page-turner! While I do have that book as a paper-back, I’m really enjoying reading with my Kindle. I can stay up late (as late as I can before I fall asleep face first into my pillow) and hear the owls hooting or the traffic driving past my window in the distance. If the weather stays as dark and gloomy as the weatherman says it will, then I foresee reading to the sound of thunder and rain as well. What’s not to like about that? It would be absolutely unacceptable if I mentioned the Phantom ...

Jane Austen Cross Stitch Patterns

Photo by Elaine Howlin on Unsplash Happy Pride and Prejudice Day! In honor of this wonderful day, I will not only be watching Pride and Prejudice later (the 1995 BBC one) I’m also sharing a list of the Jane Austen, and Austen-ish cross stitch patterns that I’ve made. By the end of this post, you’ll have Mr. Bingley wondering at all the accomplishments cross stitchers have these days ;) Regency Silhouettes: There are two charts here, and I like to think that they’re Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I wanted them to look like the silhouettes that you see on the walls in period dramas.  Available as a freebie, here’s the link. This is a great chart for all bookworms, with motifs inspired by Victorian wallpaper and the covers of vintage books. Caroline Bingley would be stitching this for her library, because we know that she can’t survive without good literature.  Available in my Etsy shop, link is here. I like to imagine Jane Austen staying up late, reading a new book, or adding s...

My Current Rotation

Cross Stitch Update  Today I'd like to introduce you to my rotation.   But first, let me explain how I choose what to stitch on everyday. I use a lottery system, mostly because I have a lot of wip's right now, and partly because I'm terrible at making decisions. I used to spend so much time agonizing over which one to stitch on. It also means that I spend a good amount of time on all of my wip's, not just the ones that are calling to me. I have gotten two  finishes since I started using this system at the beginning of the year.   I have seen some Flosstubers using an app, but my Mother and I thought that this would be much more fun after seeing Sitchin' Mommy use a similar system on her Flosstube channel for her Arbitrary August videos. The only day that I don't use the lottery is on Sunday. I stitch on whatever is calling to me on Sundays.   I used eight glass beads- the kind you buy at the dollar store- and labeled them A through H with a Sharpie. Then I...
