A Sandwich, 25/7, and Old Glory

Thanksgiving was wonderful, as always. The million dollar question is; what's better? Thanksgiving dinner, or the Thanksgiving leftovers?

Every year, I look forward to making the leftovers into what can only be called the ultimate sandwich. It's commonly called a Monte Cristo.

The blog Taste and Tell describes a Monte Cristo like this:

"It is believed that the Monte Cristo started off as the French Croque Monsieur, a grilled cheese sandwich with Gruyere and ham. Then, starting in the 1930s, more variations of this sandwich started to show up cookbooks, then in the 1950s, it made its way onto a menu in a southern California restaurant under the name of Monte Cristo. It then made its debut at Disneyland in 1966."

There's a recipe at the link too. For Thanskgiving leftover purposes, I like to use turkey, pepperjack cheese (because that's the melty cheese in my fridge) and jellied cranberry. Give the sandwich a try, it's absolutely delicious.

So since we're out of Thanksgiving, it's time to put away Turkey Bay. Here's where I got to this year:

I hoped to have a finish this year, but that's ok. It's packed away in a project bag, and waiting patiently for next year.

After laying out all my project bags (wow I have a lot of wips) I decided that I'll be stitching on two wips for awhile. My Mother told me about something called 25/7. You choose one project and work on it for 25 minutes every day. I like trying new systems, so we'll see how it goes. My 25/7 project is Russian Hunt by Riolis. Fairly confident that this picture us the right way up:

With a little bit of imagination and a lot of squinting, you can deduce that it's a horse neck. That 14 count aida is so nice on my eyes. 👀

The other project is Contemporary Flag

Don't think I'll put this one away until I've gotten it finished. We'll see.

Hope you have fun setting out your Christmas decorations, and sipping your peppermint mochas! For anyone who wants a bit of ambience while they stitch, I recommend this lovely YouTube channel:

The landscape videos are great, but the stars of this channel are the fireplaces.

Gloomy Weather Reading, Phoenixes, and a Promo Code

Photo by  Alessia Cocconi  on  Unsplash It’s a very stormy, overcast kind of day at the Castle as I write this post. It wouldn’t take much to make me think of books I love, but doesn’t a day that makes you stay inside just make you want to read? A few years ago, I read the Phantom of the Opera. While I had seen the Emmy Rossum movie adaptation, I had never read the book, so I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was fantastic, and a real page-turner! While I do have that book as a paper-back, I’m really enjoying reading with my Kindle. I can stay up late (as late as I can before I fall asleep face first into my pillow) and hear the owls hooting or the traffic driving past my window in the distance. If the weather stays as dark and gloomy as the weatherman says it will, then I foresee reading to the sound of thunder and rain as well. What’s not to like about that? It would be absolutely unacceptable if I mentioned the Phantom ...

Jane Austen Cross Stitch Patterns

Photo by Elaine Howlin on Unsplash Happy Pride and Prejudice Day! In honor of this wonderful day, I will not only be watching Pride and Prejudice later (the 1995 BBC one) I’m also sharing a list of the Jane Austen, and Austen-ish cross stitch patterns that I’ve made. By the end of this post, you’ll have Mr. Bingley wondering at all the accomplishments cross stitchers have these days ;) Regency Silhouettes: There are two charts here, and I like to think that they’re Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I wanted them to look like the silhouettes that you see on the walls in period dramas.  Available as a freebie, here’s the link. This is a great chart for all bookworms, with motifs inspired by Victorian wallpaper and the covers of vintage books. Caroline Bingley would be stitching this for her library, because we know that she can’t survive without good literature.  Available in my Etsy shop, link is here. I like to imagine Jane Austen staying up late, reading a new book, or adding s...

My Current Rotation

Cross Stitch Update  Today I'd like to introduce you to my rotation.   But first, let me explain how I choose what to stitch on everyday. I use a lottery system, mostly because I have a lot of wip's right now, and partly because I'm terrible at making decisions. I used to spend so much time agonizing over which one to stitch on. It also means that I spend a good amount of time on all of my wip's, not just the ones that are calling to me. I have gotten two  finishes since I started using this system at the beginning of the year.   I have seen some Flosstubers using an app, but my Mother and I thought that this would be much more fun after seeing Sitchin' Mommy use a similar system on her Flosstube channel for her Arbitrary August videos. The only day that I don't use the lottery is on Sunday. I stitch on whatever is calling to me on Sundays.   I used eight glass beads- the kind you buy at the dollar store- and labeled them A through H with a Sharpie. Then I...
