A Christmas Movie, Dark Floss, and a Tortie Cat

Happy Wednesday

Last week I decided to try out a new-to-me Christmas movie, called The Shop Around the Corner.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

It was made in 1940, and stars James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It's based on a play by a Hungarian playwright, and the story is set in Hungary. I loved it! It was funny, sweet, with great acting. All of the ingredients for a perfect Christmas Rom-Com! Here's a plot description from IMDB:

Two employees at a gift shop can barely stand each other, without realizing that they are falling in love through the post as each other's anonymous pen pal.

Oh, my Dear Friend, my heart was trembling as I walked into the post office, and there you were, lying in Box 237. I took you out of your envelope and read you, read you right there. - Klara Novak, The Shop Around the Corner
What's not to like?!?

Cross Stitch Corner

It turns out that when you listen to podcasts and cross stitch, you get a lot of cross stitching done! Here's my progress on Nikolai:
Russian Hunting by Riolis

I started a new column, and finished the horse's nose. Nikolai's arm is looking good too. I've hit a few 10 x 10 squares of dark floss, but once I finish this column I can move back into the sky that has all those pretty shades of pink and pale blue.

After taking a look in my shop, I decided that it needed another birth sampler. Here's what the new design looks like so far:

Coming along nicely! I'm debating whether or not I should add a third empty box at the bottom. Stay tuned.

Odds & Ends

Want to stitch on something while you watch The Shop Around the Corner? Here's a freebie I designed:

You may not know it, but you really need to watch this video of a cat running through the snow. Here's the link to the video.

Happy stitching!

Gloomy Weather Reading, Phoenixes, and a Promo Code

Photo by  Alessia Cocconi  on  Unsplash It’s a very stormy, overcast kind of day at the Castle as I write this post. It wouldn’t take much to make me think of books I love, but doesn’t a day that makes you stay inside just make you want to read? A few years ago, I read the Phantom of the Opera. While I had seen the Emmy Rossum movie adaptation, I had never read the book, so I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was fantastic, and a real page-turner! While I do have that book as a paper-back, I’m really enjoying reading with my Kindle. I can stay up late (as late as I can before I fall asleep face first into my pillow) and hear the owls hooting or the traffic driving past my window in the distance. If the weather stays as dark and gloomy as the weatherman says it will, then I foresee reading to the sound of thunder and rain as well. What’s not to like about that? It would be absolutely unacceptable if I mentioned the Phantom ...

Fabric, Moving the Q-Snap, and Fall Beverages

Phone Stand Pillow In my last post, I mentioned making a phone stand pillow. My first step was deciding which fabric to use. After going on an expedition through the Castle's fabric room, I've decided on these prints: I want to make more than one phone stand. One for when I'm reading, stitching, watching TV, etc. While I probably (famous last words, haha) won't use all of these fabrics, I still have to decide who stays and who goes. More on that in my next post, so stay tuned. WIP Update Here's where I got to since last time: Medieval Menagerie by Fox and Rabbit Designs Behold! A finished phoenix! I'm very fond of this phoenix. Don't those feathers look magnificent? As an added bonus for finishing this first dazzling bird, I can move my Q-Snap, which is always a treat. It gives one such a great sense of accomplishment. As for my next steps, I'll start stitching the other phoenix and the remaining motifs in this band before I begin stitching the egg in...
